Heartwork

Work of the eyes is done, now
go and do heart-work
on all the images imprisoned within you….

"Heart-work" Exhibition
( Texas Tech University, Fall 2001)
Allows Viewers to "See" Life Through the Eyes of the Blind
“Heart-work”, an exhibit now on display in the Croslin Room
of the University Library at Texas Tech, brings together the
poetry of visually handicapped students and the images of Dallas fine art
photographer and TTU alumnus Roger Moore. The text of the poetry is printed on
the photographs in Braille. It is accompanied by the printed version of the
poems and also the printed comments of children and others who have read the
poems.
This unique and captivating exhibit helps visitors to “see
life through the eyes of those who are visually handicapped”. It is the result
of a professor becoming more aware of the challenges faced by her handicapped
students. Dr. Jacqueline McLean was teaching a poetry workshop when she became
acquainted with a visually handicapped student. Both she and photographer Roger
Moore have commented that this project has made a lasting impact on their lives
and on the lives of the students. “What a privilege it has been to work with
these creative students”, Moore stated. “Their poetry is really from the heart
and that was the inspiration for my photographs.”
Dr.
McLean explained some of the process of getting the exhibit together. “In order
to get the Braille wording on the photographs, Mr. Moore had to print them on
Braille paper.” It was a painstaking task, but the result is a captivating
display which tends to put forth the question “Who is really handicapped
here?”
